The first day Thomas and Simen opened the door of their new business, the previous owners' past customers began to file in with problems like the previous owner putting defective parts into their cars, and the people wanted their money back. 

Simen showed up for work that first day with $230 in his pocket and went home with $0 after they refunded the previous customers, and did what had to be done to mend the relationship with the neighborhood customer base. First-day receipts, $230... not how Harvard Business School would suggest you begin to build your empire. But read on, perhaps Harvard Business School should take a lesson from Holbrook. 

Simen and Thomas are business partners in the automotive repair and salvage market. The 6 Mile and Woodward location had a small salvage yard to store vehicles totaled in an accident. Companies like Holbrook bid in an auction for the wrecked vehicle.  The salvage business removes the undamaged parts (suspension and drivetrain parts) that are still working and sells them at a discount for many of us who can not afford to have the dealership or repair shop replace the part with a new part. You can see how someone like Holbrook Automotive can be a lifeline to a neighborhood. 

When I first met the Dynamic Duo 7 years ago, I was asked to come down at 6 AM before the workday began. I was concerned that driving to that area, consisting of abandoned and burned-out homes would be dangerous. I came off I-75 to 6 Mile and began trekking along dark, littered streets. But as I got closer, the lights on the horizon were like a beacon, and I rolled into a well lit clean, silver and blue painted multiple repair shop campus of engine, transmission, windshield, tires, brakes, and suspension buildings; I was blown away at the clean pavement, no graffiti, and not a lot of security that I could see. 

Simen and Thomas wanted Holbrook Automotive Consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. After the prayers (20 minutes), we spoke, and I asked why there was no sign of abuse, as seen in other struggling businesses in the area. They both told me that when you are the source of sometimes keeping beyond-repair vehicles on the road so the good people in the neighborhood could get to work, the word goes out that it's “HANDS OFF!!!”

One story Thomas told me about why Holbrook Automotive is loved in their respective neighborhoods is that a single mom with an older car came with the story that her engine and transmission needed to be replaced (as another shop told her) and that she had just scrapped up the $3000 that the other shop had quoted for the job. 

The crew put the car up on the hoist, drained the engine oil (the standard first step in engine replacement), and noticed 8 quarts of oil came out. Hmmm, that explained why the engine was smoking so badly. They then drained the transmission oil, and there was no fluid. That explained why the transmission was not shifting. 

The boys put 4 quarts of new oil in the engine and new fluid in the transmission and called the lady to come pick up her car. They told her to drive it around the block and see if it was OK. She said it was great on her return and was prepared to hand over $3000 when she was presented with the bill. The invoice said $80 for fluids and shop supplies. She was then told that someone did the dirty deed to bill her out of her money. She broke down crying and blubbering how the other clowns would have taken advantage of her. 

That person is the poster child for Holbrook Automotive in her family, neighborhood, and area. That is why Holbrook Automotive does not need to advertise; no advertising can come close to a true story like this for why you need to take your vehicle to a Holbrook Automotive store. 

Today, there are 13 Holbrook Automotive businesses, many of which are retail establishments. Several salvage yards are downriver and at the 6-mile location (they have purchased the buildings around them to expand the salvage yard). 

With over $20 million in sales, 90+ employees, and a new E-Commerce business, this place is rocking. They are not the least expensive, as they charge a fair price for the salvaged parts, and their employees are professional tradesmen, not untrained people trying to replace a strut. 

I asked Simen and Thomas why they had succeeded. They said in unison that it was “God.” All Glory and Thanks to God. They are not shy about putting the Sacred Heart of Jesus image front and center when you enter their stores.  

Thomas and Simen consecrated every store to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and I brought the materials and witnessed the ceremony. I have walked the path with them on their great journey to build this multi-store empire run like your neighborhood mom-and-pop shop.
